Project for the completion and restoration of the historic west waterfront in Brindisi
Returning to the city a space that speaks of the sea, history and the future: this is the central objective of the project to complete the city of Brindisi’s historic western waterfront. A strategic intervention that closes the urban design started in the 2000s on the Regina Margherita waterfront, redefining the last stretch – from the fountain of the Empire to the Admiralty gate – with a contemporary vision, respectful of memory and attentive to the quality of public space. The project, included in the ‘Brindisi Smart City Port’ programme and co-financed under the 2014-2020 ‘Infrastructure and Networks’ CAP, intervenes in a symbolic place for the city, overlooking a port rich in historical and identity stratifications. The new configuration envisages the enlargement of the pedestrian areas, the reorganisation of the road network and parking areas, the laying of new natural stone paving and the insertion of street furniture and scenographic LED lighting. The project integrates greenery through new trees (palm trees) and restores visual coherence to the entire seafront. This is not only an urban requalification work, but a cultural project: a public space returned to the community, designed for events, walks, and capable of strengthening the dialogue between city and port, between memory and contemporaneity.
