Hydrological and hydraulic study in support of the structural plan of Mugello
The hydrological-hydraulic study for the Unione Montana dei Comuni del Mugello was drafted to support the Inter-municipal Structural Plan. The final purpose of the study was to assess the existence of hydraulic risk in areas already urbanised or affected by new urban planning forecasts.
In order to simulate the formation and propagation of flood events in the basins of interest, distinguished between ‘Toscani’ (tributaries of the Tyrrhenian Sea) and ‘Romagnoli’ (tributaries of the Adriatic Sea), various hydrological models were implemented in the Hec-HMS platform with reference to meteoric forcing with return times of 30 and 200 years. Finally, in order to assess the flooding forces in the riverbed and the current and velocity in the flooded areas outside the riverbed, numerical simulations of flood wave propagation were carried out in one and two-dimensional vario-motion regimes using the HEC-RAS software vers. 5.0.5, which also made it possible to take into account the lamination effects of flood outflows downstream of the natural flooding areas of the watercourse.
