Italy Viaduct

The Italia Viaduct is a box girder bridge located in the Italian municipalities of Laino Borgo and Laino Castello, in the province of Cosenza (Calabria). It can be considered one of the largest structures of its kind in Italy and Europe. It spans the Lao River gorge and is part of the A2 Mediterranean motorway. The viaduct rests on 19 spans, 16 of which have pre-stressed reinforced concrete decks, with two lanes and independent carriageways, and three “long-span” spans with a single metal deck for both carriageways. It consists of 18 support piers on both carriageways. Pier number 9 (original numbering, which was changed following the 2015-2016 modernisation works to reduce the number of piers) is the highest, rising 155.3 m from the foundation level.
