Irrigation network in the Valdichiana Senese districts fed by the Montedoglio reservoir – 1st functional section – lot 1
The executive project concerns a functional segment of the irrigation network intended to serve approximately 950 hectares, part of the broader ‘Progetto generale di massima dell’Ente Irriguo Umbro Toscano’, which covers a total of 175,000 hectares. The intervention area, located in the Val di Chiana Senese, is part of the ‘Western System’, which covers 59,300 hectares in Tuscany and Umbria. The main pipeline, 4,370 m long, is made of spheroidal cast iron (DN 1000-450 mm diameters) and crosses strategic infrastructures such as roads, watercourses (e.g. Canale Maestro della Chiana), Snam gas pipelines, and the Florence-Rome high-speed railway line. Solutions have been designed to reduce operational risks and interference with infrastructures. Secondary pipelines (branch lines) are derived from the main pipeline with ductile iron (700-400 mm) and PVC-U (400-160 mm) pipes, for a total length of 15,665 m. Finally, a renewable energy plant (3-jet Pelton microturbine) was introduced for energy recovery downstream of the irrigation network, before delivering raw water to the Montepulciano drinking water plant, managed by Nuove Acque S.p.A.
