The text provides a comprehensive overview of the evaluation of existing bridges and viaducts subject to structural risk under seismic and decay conditions. The topic of deterioration, in particular, has been addressed in detail so as to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the state of the art.
Aspects related to the modeling and analysis of existing bridges and viaducts–reinforced concrete–with encompassing damage are also discussed in depth. This term refers to localized damage due to corrosion of reinforcing bars and subsequent cracking of concrete.
The text, updated to NTC 2018 and the Guidelines for Risk Classification and Management, Safety Assessment and Monitoring of Existing Bridges, aims to propose a new approach to existing structures in order to perform – correctly – numerical analyses (Pushover, Pushdown and nonlinear dynamics), i.e., putting into account, the variation of the mechanical faces of materials through appropriate degradation models.
