During what we in the cooperative call “the 1915–18 war,” a severe crisis in the construction sector, we had to make painful decisions and ask all our members to make enormous personal and financial sacrifices. We could have closed ranks, protected the present and waited for better times. Instead, we chose to believe even more strongly in cooperation, generational renewal and, above all, in people. That choice allowed us to save the company, but it left us with something even more important: a strong sense of teamwork that still represents our strength today. That is when I understood something: a leader’s courage is not measured by the decisions they are able to make alone, but by their ability to build a “we” strong enough to face even the worst moments together.
