The first “ILLUMINA” project was inaugurated in Cologno Monzese, in the park on Via Neruda. This initiative foresees the creation of 85 playgrounds—spaces dedicated to sport and social interaction—across Italy. Promoted by the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, and conceived by Sport e Salute S.p.A., with a total funding of €31.8 million, the project is based on a clear vision: to recognize sports activity as a right by creating free, inclusive, and safe spaces. The first site, designed by Cooprogetti in joint venture with Bolina and RPA, functions as an urban regeneration tool, capable of translating social needs into tangible, recognizable, and high-performing spaces. The modularity of the “Illumina” spaces allows each intervention to be adapted to different contexts while maintaining a strong design identity. These are not mere sports facilities, but open and inclusive systems designed to accommodate multiple activities and foster social connections. The playground thus becomes a social infrastructure: an active public space where architecture and function integrate to generate inclusion, well-being, and a sense of community, restoring the central role of public space as a shared platform.
