The new Piazza Turi Ferro was inaugurated today, Thursday, October 30, in the heart of Catania’s historic center. The square has been completely redeveloped and transformed into a green, pedestrian-friendly, and accessible public space, where vegetation and light redefine the perception of the urban environment, giving the square a new identity and a central role in the city’s collective life—designed to foster social interaction and connection between people and their surroundings.
Cooprogetti, which developed the design in RTP with Technital and Mate Engineering, oversaw the construction management with Arch. Enrico Costa as Project Director and through the Operational Management carried out by StudioFRA – Fabrizio Russo Architetti. The project interprets the square as a place of social interaction, combining innovation, usability, and respect for the historical memory of the urban context. The inauguration took place in the presence of Mayor Enrico Trantino and the Councillor for Public Works Sergio Parisi.
The works included the full pedestrianization of the area, the planting of new trees, the expansion of green surfaces, and the installation of a new-generation lighting system designed to enhance pathways and improve both the perceptual and functional quality of the space. Contemporary urban furnishings dialogue with the history of the square, creating a balanced relationship between tradition and innovation.
The project is part of a broader strategy for the regeneration of the historic center, aimed at giving back to the city high-quality, sustainable public spaces designed for the community’s well-being.
