The project is part of the broader modernization and safety upgrade of the S.S. 118, classified as C2 – secondary extra-urban road, between its junction with S.S. 121 (Bolognetta) and Corleone at approximately km 32. It aims to improve the connection between the towns of Marineo and Corleone, while enhancing the overall linkage of the route with the main Palermo–Agrigento corridor, improving service and safety levels, and bringing the province closer to the regional capital, Palermo. The project, known as the “Marineo Bypass,” covers the section between km 0+000 and km 10+500 of the S.S. 118, corresponding to the crossing of the town of Marineo. This section represents a bottleneck that currently limits the road’s capacity and contributes significantly to environmental pollution, both noise and air quality. Furthermore, the section passes directly through Marineo, resulting in heavy congestion, particularly during peak hours, often reducing travel speeds to unsustainably low levels. The area’s complex topography around the town makes conventional on-site road widening or upgrading solutions unfeasible. Currently, all traffic along this corridor passes through the town, affecting densely populated areas and numerous commercial activities.
