Río Turbio Thermal Power Plant

The Río Turbio Thermal Power Plant (CTRT) uses coal extracted from the Río Turbio Carboniferous Deposit (YCRT) as a resource for electricity generation. Environmental legal advice was provided to resolve a court injunction that prevented the plant from operating at full capacity, finally obtaining approval for full operation. In addition, several projects were implemented that contributed to the fulfilment of this objective.

Firstly, an Environmental Impact Assessment for the operational phase of the Río Turbio Thermal Power Plant was developed. This was a project of strategic importance since the start-up of the plant depended on it. Furthermore, the possibility of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) risk was ruled out through the development of an Environmental Study, taking into account the final disposal conditions of combustion residues and cover waste materials.

Additionally, an Executive Project and an Environmental Study were developed for the safety cells designated for the disposal of combustion residues. To this end, an Environmental Quality Study was conducted to verify the environmental suitability of these combustion residues during the CTRT testing period.

Finally, measurements, sampling, and chemical analyses of outdoor air quality were carried out. The objective is to use this information for the implementation of the Environmental Management Plan and for the installation of Continuous Air Quality Monitoring Stations. This aims to ensure environmental health and the quality of life for the residents of the area.
